Robert E. Hughes, Executive Director Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation
Join PCPG and EPCAMR on Saturday, November 1st for a field trip to the Pennsylvania Northeast Coal Regions. The trip will make several stops to the review some geology and history of the coal mining and acid mine drainage and remediation being performed in the region along with some of the initiatives being done to sample and rehabilitate the streams impacted in the area of former mine pools.
Intended outcomes: For anyone who has interest in the history, development, and remediation of coal mines in the region this is a must-see tour. People attending will see firsthand the impact of mine pools and abandoned mine drainage to the creeks and streams of Northeast Pennsylvania. Attendees will discover the impact or AMD to creeks and streams; learn about the history of the coal mine regions; and learn about the geology and geography of the region that supports the coal mine industry.
Who should attend: Geologists, Geology or environmental students and teachers; history buffs for the coal industry; regional environmental organizations; public entities that want to know more about environmental concerns.
Bio: Robert E. Hughes, Executive Director (EPCAMR) - Hughes has nearly 30 years of experience in grant writing, grant administration, community capacity building, and providing environmental education programs and events on abandoned mine reclamation and polluted mine water (AMD) restoration in coalfield communities throughout NE & NC PA; Co-chaired and organized 27 state-wide conferences on abandoned mine reclamation in PA; author and guest lecturer at many regional colleges and universities; coalition-builder and facilitator bringing partners together to address community environmental justice and social justice issues in areas hardest hit by past mining practices.
