Geologist Licensing Board Eliminated In California

The California Board of Geologists and Geophysicists (BGG) was eliminated, effective October 23, 2009. With no representation for geologists and no direction, the responsibilities of the BGG were transfered to the Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (BPELS). Initially, when professional licensure board cuts were being considered, the California Legislature proposed merging the BGG with California's State Mining and Geology Board (SMGB). Uproar Over PADEP Cuts In State Budget

The 26 percent budget cut for the Department of Environmental Protection and the 18 percent cut for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources continues to generate news articles and questions. Many are questioning why PA Lawmakers cut their own budgets very little in comparison to other State Agency cuts. Read Article

Dillsburg Earthquake Study Released

A study by Columbia University regarding the swarm of earthquakes impacting the Dillsburg, PA area since October 2008 has been published. It indicates that movement appears to be coming from a small volume of rock rather than a fault plane. The depth of the movement roughly corresponds to the base of a thick diabase which is believed to have been mined historically for iron ore. The report suggests that stress may be occurring at the contact between the diabase and underlying sedimentary rocks. Read report
