We will be visiting two, active limestone and dolomite quarries, a day-lighted pinnacled bedrock surface, and an active underground limestone mine.  We'll board a motor coach in the morning at a hotel in West York, pause for a box lunch at a municipal park, and return to the hotel at the end the day for a picnic-themed meal at about 4:30 PM.

The trip will provide an opportunity to observe the development of paleokarst and cave features, active mining operations (surface and underground), well developed and fully exposed karst pinnacles, sinkhole activity, various types of carbonate depositional environments (oolitic dolomite deposits, microbial reefs, limestone fanglomerates, etc.), and a portion of the Cambrian-Triassic unconformity extending along the southern margin of the Gettysburg rift basin.

These sites will provide classic examples of how structural and lithologic variations in carbonate rocks are critical factors controlling the areal extent of karst topography.

Space limited to 40 enrollments.
